From Monday 22 to Friday 25 March 2021, the IBA Closely Held and Growing Business Enterprises Committee held its 2nd IBA Virtual Entrepreneurship Conference on the topic of ‘Innovation and entrepreneurship in the next normal’, with invaluable input from seven IBA sister committees which added to the diversity of the topic.
The Covid-19 pandemic has introduced a new reality and challenges worldwide. Strategic buyers and financial investors are now able to advantage of new opportunities, either in the form of distressed M&A or strategic partnerships and combinations.

In an informative Q&A interactive session with a panel of highly experienced and well-informed Co-Chairs and speakers, there was a discussion on how foreign direct investment (FDI) is developing in the Americas. General observations across all members of the panel were the negative effects that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had in foreign investment overall.

Dealing with a highly disrupted industry is an occasion, and for us, it’s fascinating to see these five different aspects working together to create a highly disruptive industry, one with a wonderful prize for the winners at the end of the day.
Marco Rizzi welcomed all attendees and followed with some remarks on the topic of discussion, emphasising the important role of young partners and senior associates and describing them as the most valuable resource law firms have during these current unprecedented circumstances.
The webinar aimed at analysing general attitude, towards foreign investments, development of existing restrictive rules and the influence of the Covid-19 crisis on this development, as well as giving an outlook to the future.
During the webinar a panel of very experienced, highly ranked M&A lawyers from relevant jurisdictions, such as Brazil, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, shared their recent experiences and further expectations about the effects of Covid-19 on pending, done and future deals.
In order to combat Covid-19, governments around the world have shut down national economies, in some cases almost entirely. Economic life in many jurisdictions has abruptly come to a standstill and international trade has been disrupted.
The first webinar of the virtual conference focused on practical advice for lawyers and their firms on how to navigate the current economic crisis.
